From the point of its design elements and underlying technology, the answer is yes. It's implemented based on the FTTP approach, meaning Fiber To The Premises. So a subscriber gets the fiber cable all the way to their house/apartment/business. The advantage of fiber is that it has a much higher bandwidth so the customer gets a higher quality picture on TV and many other advantages. As for the data, both the download and upload speeds can reach very high levels. Take a look at the following blog. It explains all FiOS advantages and features: http://www.hdreviews.org/post/Verizon-FiOS-Review.aspx

Yes FiOS is a great service; with the backbone of FTTP the possibilities are endless.  With it being fiber all the way to the house it also means greater reliability.  Fiber can withstand so much more than copper cable, as long as it doesn't get cut or kinked, I think this will be the way of the future.  AT&Tís Uverse service is good as well but they didn't implement FTTP but to only a select few areas.  This causes more service interruptions and slower speeds at times.  All in all it's great that there are more players out there then just the cable companies.  Hopefully that will mean lower prices for us consumers.
